Picasa

It is freeware program by Google for photo cataloging and basic retouching, also a desktop client of the Picasa Web Albums service.

Picasa automatically searches for photos and movies on a hard drive and enables cataloging, describing, saving on a CD as presentation, archiving, publishing or printing. Picasa downloads data about the location where the picture was taken if the camera added GPS coordinates or allows the user to determine the location on a map. While cataloging face recognition is very important while sorting the pictures by date and location, but also the people taking part. Picasa may assign Google address book business cards to the recognized faces, in the case of publishing on Google+ information about friends on a photo will be displayed next to it.

Editing options in Picasa may not be stunning, but they are enough for quick retouching before web publishing. The retouching itself is, of course, non-destructive and all steps may be undone. There are color correction tools, a photo leveling option and popular errors (such as red eyes) removal tools. The photos can be sharpened and noise can be removed, however Picasa?s algorithms are not the best available.

The program catalogs images as JPG, TIF, PSD, BMP and RAW (optionally also GIF and PNG) as well as movies in MPG, AVI, ASF, WMV and MOV formats.
